Difference Between Air Cooled Chillers and Water Cooled Chillers

Updated: Mar 22

The air conditioning chiller units be air-cooled chiller units and water-cooled chiller units and the main difference between these two type units is the different cooling methods.

Air cooled chillers rely entirely on external air to cool chilled water, often using finned heat exchangers. The refrigeration capacity of the unit is generally below 200kw, making installation convenient and cost-effective. Typical representatives include VRFs, modular type chiller unit, air-cooled screw chiller unit, etc.

Water cooled chillers have a dedicated water system, including a cooling tower and a water pump. Water cooling uses the external environment and air to cool the cooling water, which is then used to cool the chilled water. It generally uses a shell and tube heat exchanger. The units have a relatively large capacity and high installation and maintenance costs, making it suitable for some large shopping malls and office buildings. Typical representatives include water-cooled screw chiller units and centrifugal chiller units.
